Menopausal Moments: The Spice Issue

I used to be one sharp witted cookie. Honestly, I could keep the kids’ schedules and what I needed to get at the grocery store for a week’s worth of eating in my head. Didn’t need to write anything down, didn’t need to make lists.

Menopause hit and I became a space cadet. Can’t remember anything. I forget people’s names. Forget what word I’m going to say in the middle of a sentence.

Now when I go to the grocery store, I can’t remember what I have in spice cupboard. I become convinced that I am out of Thyme, so I buy some. The other day I was looking through my spices. I have like three dry mustards and three chili powders all purchased in the last six months. Nobody needs that much dry mustard. There is just not that many recipes in the world that require dry mustard.

Getting older is so much fun. Maybe it should be called Mental Pause instead of Menopause.

  1. Oh my gosh, what a hoot. I can so relate. Maybe not to owning 3 things dry mustard, but I, too, used to remember everything and now I’ll be talking and can’t remember the simplist word. sigh. Or I’ll forget what I was saying. So frustrating. You’re right, it should be called Mental Pause. When my husband and first got married, my MIL did all of that, only she would get angry if you finished her thought. Not me. Finish it for me… PLEASE. hehehe

Since I’ve always had trouble remembering names and facts and anything that didn’t involve color and shape and location on the page, I am counting on the reverse happening to me. I’ve had to write stuff down all my life. Now that I’m going through menopause, or peri-menopause, or pre-menopause, I am expecting the mental pause I’ve lived through all my life to be reversed. Don’t you think that’s fair?

    Hi Sharon,
Too funny. I tell my wife that I can’t wait for my mind to go. Then I will sleep with a stranger every night. LOL

I love the phrase mental pause and am still going thru it. What’s especially rotten is some days l have to write everything down just to remember it! It was so bad l would have 3 or 4 grocery lists of the same items. To top it off I’d forget to take them with me. Mental Pause…Wonderful description.
